10 Essential Verbs for Meetings - Business English Vocabulary

 1. Run through - to read, look at, or explain something quickly – often used by the chairperson (the person who leads the meeting)
- Alex, could you run through the main points from the report please?
- I’m just going to run through the main project goals again.

2. Address – often used together with problem or issue - if you address a problem or issue, you start trying to solve it
- There are several issues that need to be addressed in this meeting.
- I think we need to address this problem immediately.
Tip – "deal with" is a phrasal verb which has the same meaning as address, and is also used very often with problem and issue

3. Consider - to think about something carefully, especially before making a choice or decision
- We have to consider all the options before making a decision.
- Have you considered reducing training costs?
Tips: When we use consider together with another verb, we need to use the -ing form (gerund)

4. Bring up - to mention a subject or start to talk about it
- That’s a very important point, I'm glad you brought it up.
- I don’t understand why you’re bringing this up now, its not relevant.

5. Move on – to start talking about a new subject (often used by the chaiperson)
- We can't agree on this right now, so I think it's best that we move on to the next item on the agenda
- Before we move on, does anybody have anything to add?

6. Add - to say more about something that has just been said
- I'd like to add something before we move on.
- Is there anything else you'd like to add?

7. Clarify - to make something clearer or easier to understand
- Could you clarify the first point please? I don't understand it completely.
- I know this a lot of information, so please let me know if you need me to clarify anything.

8. Comment – to express an opinion about someone or something (often used together with on)
- Would anyone else like to comment on this?
- This is important so I’d like everyone to comment.

9. Rush - to do or decide something too quickly
- We need to take some more time to consider this, we shouldn’t rush it.
- We can’t afford to rush this decision, it's too important.

10. Wrap up – to finish a meeting (often used by the chairperson)
- Before we wrap up, I’d just like to thank everybody for being here today.
- If nobody has anything else to add, then I think we'll wrap this up.
