Race and gender is 'immaterial to success and failure': Mark Latham

NSW One Nation leader Mark Latham says social justice will never be achieved through Left-wing arguments which are “primitive, anti-intellectual and driven by what people look like”.

“Statues don’t solve community violence, statues don’t solve unemployment, statues don’t solve welfare dependency, statues don’t solve drug and alcohol addiction,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray.

Mr Latham’s comments responded to Sky News contributor Nicholas Reece who previously said “white males, like you Mark, are massively over-represented in statues and memorials in Australia”.

Of the 600 statues in Melbourne, Mr Reece said approximately 590 celebrated the life and achievements of white males, leaving out a very substantial part of the population.

He suggested history had been airbrushed to celebrate European achievement to the exclusion of significant contributions made by indigenous people.

However, speaking of his own childhood Mr Latham said “I grew up in a public housing estate, we didn’t own a house, we didn’t own a car, and everything I’ve done in life I’ve worked my guts out for”.

“Any success and failure I’ve got in life is immaterial to my skin colour and immaterial to my gender, and nobody in Green Valley housing estate said 'mate here is your ticket of white privilege in life'”.
