Kenya seeks private funding for first nuclear power plant

Kenya is laying the groundwork for a public-private partnership to finance the country's first nuclear power plant, marking a significant step toward diversifying the country’s energy mix. According to Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira, the government has engaged financial advisers to determine the amount of private capital required to build a KSh500 billion nuclear facility in Siaya County. The financing work comes as Kenya awaits regulatory clearance from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The PS says expanding Kenya's energy mix to include nuclear power will strengthen electricity security by reducing reliance on weather-dependent generation sources. He adds that nuclear energy could provide stable baseload electricity needed to support industrialization and rising demand.
