Tips for Parenting a Teenager During the Pandemic from a Top Child Psychiatrist
I chatted with Dr. Harold Koplewicz, President and Medical Director of the @Child Mind Institute, on Instagram Live. We talked about his new book “The Scaffold Effect” and parenting during the pandemic. He said this is a particularly difficult time for teenagers.
“If you’re a high school student right now or even a college student your life is much worse than everyone else,” he said. He said parents have to validate their kids and say, ‘“This sucks. How am I going to help you support?”
“The other thing we can do is we can support them by modeling." he continued. "We can show them we are exercising everyday, that we’re eating something green or doing something creative. But start worrying when the signs and symptoms of real depression come on. Like that they don’t want to change out of their pajamas everyday, they’re hygiene goes away. That’s when you get a mental health professional especially if you start seeing it for more than two weeks.”
We also chatted about how to monitor screen time in the pandemic. He said, “You still have to have guidelines but you can relax it a bit.”
