In today’s walk-through, we are covering the empty streets of Canary Wharf 🏙, a part of London that has undergone a massive transformation, from being a port hub ⚓️ centuries ago to becoming the capital’s second largest financial district 🏦💷. Canary Wharf may now be home to some of the world’s largest financial companies but this place was once the busiest port in the world. Regeneration continues today with many apartments / flats and commercial buildings being built all the time.

We are starting our walk from South Quays DLR station 🚇. As we come out of the station, we can already witness the modern buildings, with a mix of both residential and office spaces. We then wander along South Quay Walk before crossing the South Quay footbridge 🌉 which takes us to the heart of Canary Wharf 🤍. Here we can see the skyscrapers up close 🏙🏙 (Yes, a lot of looking up), admiring the modern architecture that surrounds us. This area is usually busy on weekdays but because more people are working remotely due to pandemic 🦠, it has rather become empty and quiet. We then pass Jubilee park 🌳🌿, an urban roof garden built above the underground railway and shopping mall before exploring the rest of this financial district.

Further down, we visit the 🚝 Crossrail - Canary Wharf station which was set to open December 2018 but has been delayed until at least 2021. Part of the station is already open where restaurants are at but in this walk, we go straight up to the Crossrail Place Gardens 🌿🌳 located on the rooftop of the station to surround ourselves with some greenery.

After Crossrail, we head to West India Quay, a historical part of the area and the busiest port in the world centuries ago ⚓️⛴. The docks closed to commercial traffic in 1980 and the Canary Wharf development that we are seeing now was built from this site. We then walk up to the Canary Wharf pier, where boat services to Central London can be accessed from. 🛳

We now head back to heart of Canary Wharf passing Cabot Square and the DLR station before we finish our walk at Canary Wharf tube station. 🚇
