⁉️TRIVIA: In contrary to what many people believe, the City of London is not part of London. It functions independently and has a separate governing bodies and even its own mayor - interesting, it’s like a Secret City 🤫!

In today’s walk, we are featuring the eastern side of the historic City of London . This is the oldest part of the city 🏛 and the main financial district 🏦 of London, visually where old meets new.

Our walk starts just outside of Bank tube station 🚇. Noticeably, we are already surrounded by historical sites—the Royal Exchange🏛, Bank of England🏦 and Mansion House. A short pause to breath in the history around us before we walk to the Monument🗼, which was built in remembrance to the Great Fire of London. We then continue exploring passing the skyscrapers 🏙, many of which are nicknamed based on their iconic shapes—the Walkie Talkie, the Cheese Grater🧀, the Gherkin 🥒, the Can of Ham and the Scalpel . After admiring the modern architecture, we walk down memory lane to one of London’s hidden gems, the 14th century covered market , the Leadenhall Market 🎪. Because of national lockdown, the place is rather quiet with shops closed but the market is usually busy with pubs, restaurants and even stalls for cheese 🧀!

We continue with our walk passing shops, side streets and alleys, observing how empty they are but admiring the beautiful buildings at the same time. Our final stop is Liverpool Street Station 🚇, one of the main stations in London where train connections to the rest of the country can be taken from. Also inside and outside of the station, there are memorials dedicated to the children of Kindertransport 🚂, the trains that helped transport ten thousand unaccompanied Jewish children away from wars in Central Europe to Britain.
