PAINTING TIMELAPSE || Expressive Portrait in Oil - "Robert"

My Grandfather passed away this February, months before his 75th anniversary with my Grandmother. This photo was taken by my Aunt when she was a child as he was working on the roof. He was witty and kind and supportive, and loved by many.
This winter we were able to watch all the old video footage he took of his family during road trips, the birthdays of my dad and his siblings, their graduations and parties. He captured all the weird faces and funny dances of the children and made sure to film the beautiful sunsets and landscapes of the places they visited. It seemed dreamlike. I wanted to paint everything. I didn't get to tell him, but painting him felt like I did.
