This short clip includes three classic belt cane lesson don’ts. 1. Provides the wrong cane frame for that child in that environment, 2. Gives directions not destinations, 3. Overestimating the child’s competence and understanding of belt cane feedback.
Let’s take a deeper dive
This student is age six years and blind. It’s his first time wearing the belt cane – the full-stop sensation of a belt cane is welcome, new, and surprising to the first timers. You could have him reach out to touch the wall as he turns left, or cane skill have him reach down and tap the cane frame against the wall before and after turning.
The teacher on the video is giving him direction prompts, his reaction suggests he needs more time to understand what just happened, first.
Alternative lesson prompt:
“Your belt cane stopped you at the cafeteria wall- reach out and touch, can’t go straight, let’s turn right go to the cafeteria door.”
These warnings "Be cautious" "Find wall on right, and keep walking" are vague verbal prompts. Try a more specific destination prompt like "take me to the cafeteria to get the lunch menu for today…"
