10 Month Update of Brayden Born Blind Began Belt Cane Age 5
Brayden, after 10 months of wearing his belt cane every day, is now a true explorer. If you watch this video from start to finish you will see how he is vocalizing, tapping his cane frame for information, and really investigating his surroundings in the middle of the floor – independently with safety.– By comparison, Kaitlyn shared a video of how at age 6.7 years old he still needs to hold onto a wall when he is not wearing his belt cane. Brayden’s progress is only possible because of the support of his teachers and family in wearing his belt cane and never giving up on him. He is blind due to Anophthalmia (left eye), Peter's Anomaly & Microphthalmia (right eye)- child has no usable vision.
BEFORE BELT CANE
Brayden just started school before his 5th birthday and is still learning concepts of his world. He is a tactile and auditory learner. He does not currently have usable language but he will sign more, smile and cry to communicate. He enjoys exploring the area around him and will engage in hand under hand exploration. He has increased his ability to sit and do activities but it takes 10-15 trials of doing an activity before he is a familiar enough to be a willing participant. He likes 'writing' on the braillewriter, putting toys in/out of bucket, and drumming. He has been introduced to a white cane but he will not hold onto it without hand over hand.
Brayden just was working on walking independently by just holding hands. Due to the pandemic had minimal intervention and was walking with someone behind him hold is hands above his head-his gait is a little off balance but he is getting stronger every day. He is starting to trail items when facing them with two hands. When holding one hand with an adult he walks forward and will use body protection techniques when prompted.
