WHAT IS "BERSERK ANTI-CHEESE EDIT"?

The "BERSERK" (1997) duology that not even Griffith dreamt of! The goal is to condense the original anime and make it more cinematic, to reinforce subtlety in scenes, and to provide a more fluid experience. It takes out pointless/repetitious dialogue (there's a lot), corny lines, lengthy/needless exposition, some drawn-out moments, and some repeated/crude animations. Numerous scenes have been reworked, sometimes reorganizing/altering shots and audio.

BERSERK Anti-Cheese Edit "FLESH AND BLOOD" removes 16% (35 minutes) of footage from the episodes used (not including OP/ED). This edit isn't like "Berserk Redux", "Berserk Recut", or numerous others that try to make the anime more canon. Some entire scenes and story aspects are removed, some of which are present in the manga. This is, at first, a personal edit made for myself based on my own tastes. I love the manga, but I think things could've been handled better at times. I didn't see the scenes I removed as important to the development of the story/characters.

And why dub? Because dub or scrub.

THE CREATION PROCESS

This first birthed out of my frustration from having hundreds of nitpicks, large and small, with the original anime. It also created an opportunity for me to try and better understand the anime as this story arc of BERSERK, in my eyes, serves as its core.

My goal at the beginning was strictly to retain the entire main drama of the Golden Age. I began to edit an episode and see what I could remove, until quickly realizing they'd vary greatly in length. I began by jotting down a dozen pages of notes on where to cut a scene, what to alter, etc. I didn't expect to remove as much as I did at the start, which became almost 3 hours of footage. I decided I'd go for a "Lord of the Rings" length with 3 hours being the target.

My next step was to decide where exactly I should split this heavily cut BERSERK into movies. There was a huge obstacle in trying to justify the existence of the split beyond convenience of viewing the edit. I believed it would be clear what the theme and direction would be in the second film "FLESH AND BLOOD", but "FIRE OF THE HAWK" was extremely challenging for me to ascertain any theme or concept to build up to. I ended up treating it as a still-semi-cheesy adventure with the built-up climax being Guts' change of perspective towards the Band of the Hawk. This led me to ending it with the "Bondfire of Dreams" and to name it as I did. "FLESH AND BLOOD" would then be treated as a much more existential and psychological film, which in my opinion is also superior. If you don't like "FIRE OF THE HAWK", try and skip to "FLESH AND BLOOD". This marked the end of the original/legacy upload.

Over time I disliked the anime in more ways, including how it is as a piece of art. From there, this really became a project for myself. This was a pretty big learning experience for me overall as I barely even knew how to edit when I started. I began working on this around late-2015, and have put in many uncountable hours. I'd like to thank all the commenters who gave feedback, including those I didn't follow through with. This edit won't please everyone, but the goal is mostly to please myself. If you're a purist of the original anime, you'll likely prefer the legacy version.
