Siemens Ratcheting Screwdriver Restoration - Making a new handle!
In this video i made a restoration of a rare ratcheting screwdriver. The screwdrivers is made by the German „Siemens-Schuckertwerke“, you can see the stampmarks at its tip. It’s made between 1890 and 1945. I bought this ratcheting screwdriver for restoration from a private guy online for around 50$. When i received the ratcheting screwdriver, the function was okay besides all of the rust and the broken wooden handle. I started the screwdriver restoration by disassembling, i took everything apart. After that i took care of the tip. The old screwdrivers tip was broken and a little bent, so i started with reshaping the screwdrivers tip on the mill. I was milling the rough shape, after that i started filing the edges and ended with sanding the surfaces from 120-600 grit to give it a nice look. Next step of the screwdrivers restoration was Sandblasting the parts in the sandblasting cabinet. The inner areas of some parts got sandblasted as well, because they were very rusty. A final wirebrushing with a wirebrush on the drill gave the metal parts a nice finish for further working. I continued with the main ratcheting part and tipholder, by cleaning and sanding it on the lathe mill, the ratcheting slots were filed and sanded afterwards. Next part was the handle of the ratcheting screwdriver, including the ratcheting mechanism which is a spring and a metal bolt. The handle got filed and sanded, the main body metal part was just sanded, because it had some brass weldings from a further repair. When i was about to restore the old handle, i decided to make a new one, because the old ratcheting screwdrivers handle was to broke. So i drove to Not terrible restorations - by Dr. Beer 's workshop. He gave me a piece of 400 years old oak for my new handle. Back in my shop I put the wood on the lathe and did some woodturning. After hours of woodturning, sanding, drilling and milling the new handle for the ratcheting screwdriver turned out great! Last step in the restoration process was nickel plating the metal parts. After nickel plating the screwdriver parts, i was ready for reassembling the ratcheting screwdriver. The final test shows, how good it works again!
This restoration was a lot of fun!
