Fearless Marketer | C3 2015 | James Lecesne (4/4)

James Lecesne, an Academy Award winning writer and actor, has been called one of the greatest storytellers of his generation by the New York Times. In this video, he closes the C3 Keynote with advice on how marketers can capture attention with storytelling – a powerful force that universally attracts and moves human beings.
The world is one driven by consumers, said James Lecesne in this C3 keynote. And what do consumers look for? Especially millenials? They are searching for companies that are transparent and share their values – that they feel resemble them. It’s up to marketers to deliver those values in the form of compelling stories.
What makes a story good? James Lacesne explains: A story is really a conflict, a conflict between two equal, opposite and universal values. Think: innovation vs tradition. Mind vs body. Past vs future. Freedom vs convention. Marketers need to construct these two sides – set up a conflict – in order to tell an effective story and lay a foundation for great marketing strategies.
James Lacesne urged marketers to get started by brainstorming what their brand’s intrinsic values are. Then, marketers should create a list of values that conflict with their brand’s identity. Analyze the benefits and drawbacks of each side to help build an authentic story. (Want the rest of James Lacesne’s storytelling recipe for great marketing strategies? Watch the full video.)
At the close of the C3 keynote, Seth Besmertnik briefly reappeared on stage (25:05) to announce 2015’s Conductor Foundation Grant recipients: March of the Dimes and the September 11th Memorial Museum.
