Learn some quick SEO marketing strategies for a successful site migration from the experienced Conductor team. Our site migration checklist will help you get prepared for any type of website migration and take control of your SEO migration plan. Check it out below!
-------------Pre Site Migration----------
Reporting & Analytics: benchmark current site performance through traffic, keyword ranking, and backlink data analyses for future comparison.
Metadata: make sure that metadata is present and optimized for every page!
Robots.txt file: only block desired files pre and post site launch and make sure you don’t block your entire site when go-live comes.
XML Sitemap: submit the new XML sitemap, containing only live pages, to Google Search Console.
Crawling site: before your site migration, crawl and benchmark data to make sure you are not carrying over serious SEO technical problems.
Javascript & CSS: check that JS code is crawlable and not being blocked. Don’t carry unnecessary code to the new site.
Schema markup: ensure all old and new schema markup is properly implemented.
Page speed: know your load time on Desktop and Mobile.
Canonical tag: a Google best practice is to have a canonical tag on every page which can help with duplication and indexation issues.
Redirects: use 301 redirects for site migration. Pro tip, have an excel file with old URLs pointing to new URLs.
----------Post Site Migration--------
Reporting & Analytics:
Use Google Analytics to ensure the tracking code is implemented correctly.
Fetch and render on sampling of pages with Googlebot.
Check site traffic: if everything is implemented correctly, site traffic should recover.
Crawl site: ensure all 301 redirects are implemented and point to a 200 status code page not 400 status code.
Check crawl for broken pages, broken links, duplicate content, and missing metadata.
Check indexation of website through “site:” command in Google.
Content optimization: begin to focus on metadata refreshing, new content, and optimizing existing content.
