Are Amazon Packages Safe from COVID 19?

Are Amazon Packages Safe from COVID 19?

Are food and other items you bought today at the supermarket safe from COVID 19?
Are your Amazon Packages and other packages you order on the Internet safe from COVID 19?
So what is the risk of contracting COVID 19 through your food and packages?

Note - After all these foods and packages have been touched by multiple people- the people who put your food in the packaging or the Amazon assembly line worker processing your order, the person who loaded the truck, and the UPS or FEDEX worker who delivered your package.

So in this video, I will go over these risks and give you my advice and recommendations on how to handle supermarket foods and produce and your packages from the Internet.

So as I have discussed in other videos, it is believed that COVID 19 is spread primarily through respiratory droplets and touching contaminated surfaces.

However, according to the CDC:
“Transmission of the new coronavirus to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented. Transmission of COVID 19 occurs much more commonly through respiratory droplets than through fomites. Current evidence suggests that COVID 19 may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials.”

The CDC also says that cleaning visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is the best practice measure for preventing COVID 19 and other viral illnesses in the household and community.

Cleaning removes germs, dirt, and impurities from the surfaces, but it does not kill germs.
Disinfecting refers to chemicals used to kill germs on surfaces but doesn’t necessarily clean dirty surfaces.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has a list of disinfectants for use against COVID 19,
EPA Website for Disinfectants For Coronavirus:

So should you be cleaning and disinfecting your groceries and internet packages?
There is a lot of debate and discussion about this particular topic. However, keep in mind we are still in the middle of the pandemic and outbreak, and guidelines and recommendations are changing daily as more information and data are coming in.

I was just going over the OSHA guidelines, and I found this statement to be quite telling:
“Because the transmissibility of COVID 19 from contaminated environmental surfaces and objects is not fully understood, employers should carefully evaluate whether or not work areas occupied by people suspected to have a virus may have been contaminated and whether or not they need to be decontaminated in response.”

So with that being said, despite many health experts saying you cannot contract the covid 19 viruses through packaging, I think there is justification to anyone’s concern that they could contract coronavirus via internet packages and supermarket produce and food packaging. While covid 19 is not thought to be transmissible via food, it can live for several days on the material used to package food.

However, was a NEJM study that I went over in a previous video that found
That covid 19 was detectable on copper for up to four hours, on cardboard for 24 hours, and on plastic and steel for up to 72 hours.

The NY Times reports that some delivery workers with UPS and FEDEX continue to work while sick out of fears of losing their jobs.

“They have coughs, sore throats, aches, and fevers — symptoms consistent with the covid 19. Yet they are still reporting for their shifts in crowded shipping facilities and warehouses and truck depots, fearful of what will happen if they don’t.”

And another article in the Times reported that 24 US Postal Service workers around the United States have fallen ill with covid 19.

Here are my recommendations advice on minimizing the risk of contracting through packaging.
So to be extra-cautious, since covid 19 stability is pretty good on cardboard, if you get an Amazon or internet packaging, quickly dispose of the outer packaging outside of your home, wash your hands immediately after handling, and try to avoid touching your face.
Clean the wrapping off the items you ordered and the item itself with disinfectant wipes.

With that being said, keep in mind that the amount of virus on a surface is important. The fewer viral particles you are exposed to, the less likely you are to get infected. So even though there remains a risk of contracting covid 19 through packages and supermarket foods, those risks are extremely low.
