Best Henna & Indigo Recipe for Shiny Jet Black Hair

If you're looking to go black, Indigo is perfect for getting that jet black/blue black color with beautiful shine minus the damage. This video breaks down every detail about the entire process—I seriously left no stone unturned! haha It is wonderful for all hair types and through trial and error, I've worked out this recipe that is long lasting. This particular mix resulted in the shiniest hair and the dryness from previous henna experiences was finally gone!

You can omit the Indigo part if you would like to just dye your hair a reddish color, I would suggest though, purchasing a henna with a higher percentage of lawsome. I didn't want too much red, so the one I use here is very mild. I buy all my henna and indigo from mehandi.com. They have many different kinds of henna, some use to list a low level of pesticides (don't see them anymore), but you'll want to read about each one before deciding what's best for you just in case. Everything I use in the actual video is contaminant-free, I'm including the links for them below:

Ancient Sunrise: Rajasthani Jasmine Henna 100g
(Update 6/2/14: I've recently read that green tea, cranberry juice, or orange juice included on it's own can also be used to activate the lawsome for a darker color and less harsh acid on the strands instead of lemon and ACV. Haven't tried it yet, but will keep you posted!)

Ancient Sunrise: Sudina Indigo 100g
(Make sure the powder is not expired and/or improperly stored as the dyeing properties are very fragile and breakdown easily).

The ombre didn't take at all. :(!! Womp!

WASHING NOTES: I didn't mention this in the video, but I only rinse my hair with water when removing the henna (don't shampoo). Once I'm done with the indigo, then I go about co-washing my hair and styling as usual. I still don't use shampoo though as it may strip the indigo. Your hair will have a very earthy smell for a few days, but you want to give it some time to take. After three days, it's safe to wash again as usual.

And lastly, you'll have to toss any indigo you have left over. The dyeing agents breakdown almost immediately and no longer work after that first day. If you decide to give any of this a try, it's well-worth the time!
