Former coal mining town - Cherry, Illinois - USA rust belt

The population is only a few hundred now, but once there were several thousand people living here. While there's not a lot in the way of abandoned buildings, this town did once have a huge coal mine run by a railroad company to supply all it's steam engines with fuel. But in 1909 there was a huge disaster where over 250 miners - some as young as 11 years old - were trapped underground and died. The mine was never used again after that.

The two big "hills" at the edge of town are actually made of all the broken up red bricks from those collapsed mine buildings. You can catch a glimpse of the red at the base of the closer hill.

The main road of this town was once packed with row-buildings up and down both sides, but now just a few of them remain, standing alone. The big grassy areas in the town were once stuffed with modest homes packed fairly close together - but as many of the homes vanished over the years, most of those little lots were eventually bought up by neighbors as bigger lawns for the few homes remaining.
