India’s First Bee Corridor 🐝🌼 Highways Go Green! | UPSC
Imagine driving at 100 km/hr on a national highway — and right beside you, a carefully designed ecological lifeline is taking shape.
India is set to develop its first “Pollinator Corridors” along highways, announced by the National Highways Authority of India. These Bee Corridors aim to transform transport routes into biodiversity-supporting landscapes.
Why does this matter?
More than 75% of flowering plants and nearly one-third of global food crops depend on pollinators like bees. A decline in bee populations directly threatens food security, agriculture, and biodiversity — especially in a country like India, where livelihoods are closely linked to farming.
Instead of traditional ornamental plantations, highways will now feature nectar-rich native species such as neem, karanj, mahua, palash, jamun, and siris. The flowering cycles will be staggered to ensure continuous nectar availability throughout the year.
The planning is scientifically grounded. Flowering clusters will be spaced every 500 metres to 1 kilometre — aligned with the average foraging range of honeybees. Even dead wood and hollow trunks will be retained to support nesting habitats. In essence, highways will evolve from transport corridors into ecological corridors.
The targets are ambitious: around 40 lakh trees by 2026–27, with nearly 60% under the Bee Corridor initiative, and at least three dedicated pollinator corridors.
Geographically, this initiative integrates agro-climatic suitability, habitat connectivity, reduced ecosystem fragmentation, and climate-resilient infrastructure. It stands as a powerful example of how infrastructure development and ecological conservation can move together.
The next time you travel on a national highway, remember — it may not just be a road. It could be a silent guardian of future food security. 🐝🌍
