Women Farmers of India 🚜 Climate Change’s Real Frontline! | UPSC
UPSC aspirants, here’s a shocking reality about Indian agriculture that many people overlook.
In India, nearly 64% of the agricultural workforce consists of women, and they perform around 70% of farm-related tasks. From crop production to livestock care, women are deeply involved in almost every stage of the agricultural system. Yet paradoxically, most of them are not officially recognized as “farmers.”
Recognizing this global reality, the Food and Agriculture Organization has declared 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer, highlighting the critical role women play in agriculture, food systems, and rural livelihoods.
But why are women farmers so important today?
Because agriculture is no longer just about producing food. It is closely connected with climate change adaptation. As extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and heatwaves increase, small and marginal farmers are the first to feel the impact—and a majority of them are women.
Data from India shows the scale of their contribution:
Around 75% participation in crop production
Nearly 79% involvement in horticulture
About 95% engagement in animal husbandry and fisheries
Despite this massive contribution, women farmers face structural challenges such as limited land ownership, poor access to institutional credit, restricted market access, and limited decision-making power. These barriers make climate adaptation even more difficult.
To address these challenges, government initiatives like Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission are promoting Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and producer groups to strengthen the bargaining power and market access of rural women.
From a Geography and Environment perspective, climate change affects agriculture through rainfall variability, rising temperatures, and changes in crop productivity. When women farmers are empowered with resources, training, and institutional support, they become key drivers of food security, rural economic growth, and climate resilience.
That’s why experts increasingly emphasize a powerful idea:
Empowering women farmers is not just a gender issue — it is a climate survival strategy.
