Capitol in Chaos: Speaker McCarthy Removed by Hard-Right Republicans

For the first time ever, the speaker of the House of Representatives has been ousted by his own party.

Republican congressman and Trump ally Matt Gaetz’s bid to have speaker Kevin McCarthy removed succeeded by 216-210.

All 208 Democrats voted against the Republican speaker, meaning just eight Republicans pushed the vote over the line against McCarthy.

Nobody has ever been removed as speaker before, and with McCarthy adamant he will not run again, it’s unclear what will happen next.
