SSRL became a national laboratory facility in 1977

We're celebrating the anniversary of our synchrotron radiation light source, SSRL. Here's an excerpt of our upcoming history video. The facility is turning 50 this year. This short reel reminisces over the year SSRL became a national laboratory facility. Starting in 1977 with new funding from the National Science Foundation, SSRL (Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource) moved from being an experimental project to a national user facility. SSRL produced various types of X-ray beams that scientists would use to peer into the atomic structures of materials and biological samples. SSRL would go on to become one of the pioneering synchrotron facilities in the world, known for outstanding user support and important contributions to science and instrumentation. SSRL’s funding moved to DOE (Department of Energy) in 1982.
