What is an X-ray Laser? And what can you do with it? #SLACexplains

Have you ever wondered why scientists use X-rays in their research? Just as X-rays employed in hospitals enable the visualization of bones within our bodies, scientists employ X-rays to gain insights into the inner workings of materials, uncovering their molecular structures and properties in great detail. To accomplish this, they use a specialized instrument known as an X-ray free electron laser, or XFEL for short. XFELs generate extremely powerful and focused X-ray beams with such brightness that they are capable of observing atoms in motion at exceedingly fast speeds. In essence, an XFEL functions like an ultrafast camera, capturing images of events occurring on the atomic scale. These XFELs can generate 3D models of each phase of an atomic reaction within materials or biological molecules. By revealing the structure of proteins within the human body or by examining novel materials with extraordinary properties, XFELs are truly revolutionizing our understanding across numerous fields of study.
