How can we improve our understanding of Fusion Energy? #SLACexplains #XFEL #OurLCLSStory
Check out our XFEL explainer on SLAC's website: https://www6.slac.stanford.edu/research/slac-science-explained/xfels
Fusion energy holds immense potential as a clean and abundant source of power, but a lot of work remains to be done. Engineers and scientists at SLAC are building a new state-of-the-art instrument to further our understanding of fusion energy among many other capabilities. This instrument will be coupled with LCLS, SLAC’s X-ray free-electron laser or XFEL. XFELs serve as a very high-speed camera to look at atomic interactions. Combining this X-ray laser with an instrument that can, for a brief instant, produce extremely high pressures and temperatures will allow scientists to observe and analyze the behavior of matter under extreme conditions, such as those encountered within fusion devices for clean energy. Fusion energy research has the potential to advance our understanding of this clean energy source, and will pave the way for future advancements in sustainable power generation!
