Germany: Heavy police presence at Berlin anti-lockdown protest

Thousands rallied underneath Berlin's famous Brandenburg Gate on Wednesday morning as MPs in German parliament began discussions on amendments to the Protection against Infection Act, introducing more COVID restrictions at the federal level.

Protesters chanted slogans calling for more freedom and faced off with law enforcement officers who were deployed in large numbers on the scene.

Several demonstrators were detained and over 30 protesters received a fine for not wearing a mask at a mass gathering.

Officers cordoned off the road to the parliament building, blocking the way for protesters to further disrupt proceedings.

Draft of a new paragraph of the controversial law, entitled 'Special protective measures to combat the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus' included contact restrictions in private and public spaces, obligation to wear a mask and more travel limitations, causing outrage among sceptics.
