Clashes in Berlin as court overturns rental cap

Clashes broke out as thousands protested against the decision to overturn the rent cap in Berlin.

Protesters reportedly threw bottles, police deployed pepper spray and arrested several.

Germany’s Constitutional court in Karlsruhe ruled that Berlin’s state government cannot create its own law, as federal government legislation regulating rents already exists.

The cap came into effect in February 2020 and aimed to freeze the rents of 1.5 million apartments in the German capital for five years.

Tenants are now worried about potential rent increases.
