Bernstein on Ives

Excerpt from lecture 5 The 20th Century Crisis . In this highly edited clip Mr. Bernstein uses Ives short composition "The Unanswered Question" as a vehicle to pose the central Question of his lecture Series . Wither Music ? In fact this series is actually about how western European Art Music and the other arts evolved toward higher and higher levels of ambiguity (modernism) i.e. chromaticism harmonically, rhythmic complexity, and ultimately semantic meaning ,as history progressed . This composition, "The Unanswered Question" (which is also the title of this series ) opens the door to what Mr. Bernstein calls " the 20th Century crisis ".
