Goodbye Porkpie Hat

The Blues as an Idiom (unlike Jazz) doesn't tolerate evolution much . If the Blues becomes too sophisticated then it ceases to be the Blues . Thats why then: When Jazz musicians get together and play a Blues , the music that results is invariably Jazz no matter how much respect is paid to the Blues by those musicians .
So even in the world of Jazz Blues this composition is truly an anomaly . Mingus's undeniably sophisticated composition might be the most harmonically advanced Blues ever written . Mr. Charles Mingus , very much to his credit , was able to push the basic harmonic DNA of the Blues to it's snapping point without evicting that feeling of "The Blues" . As bluesy as it sounds however, make no mistake it is in the end a demanding Jazz composition , not many blues bands would play it ,even some jazz musicians revert to standard jazz blues chord changes for their solos ( not whats happening here ). That said this uncanny composition is also an exceptionally beautiful ballad named for and dedicated to Lester Young, whose nickname was Porkpie Hat .
For me this brilliant composition is like a Blues from a more advanced civilization, simultaneously earthy and primal, yet elegant, intriguing and sophisticated . The way, this chord progression lies, really calls to me energetically :-) I hope I can be forgiven for having so much fun with this beautiful ballad .
