At this point, I’ve had hundreds of interviews with different people applying to work. There is one common denominator for all the people that got a job with us, and I’m going to share it with you.

The first thing to note is that there is an infamous saying: “There is no such thing as stupid questions, only stupid answers.”

That saying comes from a good place because we want to encourage people to communicate and create a safe space for them to ask questions, and I agree with that 100%

The problem is: People don’t come prepared out of laziness, and they waste your time asking questions that the simplest of google searches could answer them.

If you’re applying for a job, the first question I usually ask is, what do you know about us? If your answer is nothing, the chances of you landing a position with us are slim to none. In the first sentence, you showed me that you didn’t even bother to go over our website for 15 minutes to get an idea of what we do. You’re just looking for any type of job.

The bad thing to say is: I don’t really know that much. What do you guys do?
A good thing to say would be: I see you guys focus on E-commerce a lot. What company size do you usually target?

That would show general interest and understanding of what we’re doing and what our challenges might be.

Trust me when I say that we’ve written off very experienced Senior developers in the first five minutes of the interview because they came unprepared and nonchalant. If you want me to be enthusiastic about you, you have to show me that you’re enthusiastic about what we’re doing.

Here is a little story of how I landed my first full-time job, which I think can be very useful for you if you’re applying for jobs.

In 2010 I applied for an IT job in San Francisco. I had a telephone interview with them, and I had never had a real job interview before that.

The first thing I did was to read up on them as much as possible. After that, I simply googled common job interview questions. I listed the 20 most common questions. I wrote down the answer to each and every one of them, and I memorized my answers by heart.

Sure enough, most of the questions I got were amongst those questions.

I also knew that in the end, they would ask me if I had questions, so I prepared three questions. They were both questions, but also an opportunity to show off some knowledge.

I specifically remembered that one of the questions I asked was about the dress code in the company. That was for two reasons.

1. I wanted to know what the dress code is.
2. I wanted to show that I had a cultural understanding of the US market because in Sweden, most companies if you’re not a bank and something of that nature, don’t have a dress code.

And sure enough, what did their CEO say... He said good question. It shows you have an understanding of the culture.

30 minutes into the interview, the CEO of the company simply said: Ok, you got the job

The reason I knew that I had done well was that I knew that a friend of mine was supposed to have an interview with the same company a few hours later. But obviously, I had done well enough that the CEO had already decided that he wanted me for that position.

This is just an example, but the takeaway is if you want to impress people, come prepared, and show interest in them!
