My ACDF Surgical Adventure (May, 2019--Not 2013 As I Say in the Video) 🙄

NOTE: This video was shot in 2019, not 2013, as mentioned in the second part of the video. (Hey, I was just six hours past my final oxycodone dose!) SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS DESCRIPTION PARAGRAPH FOR SIX-MONTH UPDATE. In this three-part video, I document my experience with my 3-level anterior cervical discectomy & Fusion (ACDF) surgery. In part one, I talk about the reasons I needed the surgery. In part two, I'm 4 days post-op and talk about the challenges faced so far. Finally, in part three, I'm 6-days post-op, and it's the day I first got to see my incision. Spoiler alert: Everything went great.

SIX MONTH UPDATE: My procedure was 100% successful. I just heard from the doctor this morning (11/19/2019) and he brought the good news that the fusions are complete at all levels. I still have the tingling in my left thumb, but it is not disruptive to my life. I think it's one of those things I only notice when I talk about the surgery.

I took this health scare to heart. Having lived through chronic pain, I'm determined now to do whatever I can to never go through that again. I've lost over 20 pounds, I work out regularly, and meet with a personal trainer twice a week. I'll never be buff again, and I don'[t want to be, but now that I can move without pain, I'm going to move around a LOT.

ONE YEAR UPDATE: Not much has changed since the six-month update. The tingling thumb is still there, and likely will be forever. As before, it's not something that interferes with my daily life. As for neck mobility, I think it's pretty good. Down and to the right is difficult. It doesn't hurt; there's just something of a hard stop. Reading in my lap is difficult for the same reason, but it's simple to compensate for by putting a pillow on my lap and placing the book on top of that. And in the spirit of more good news, my weight loss now stands at 32 pounds.
