Doing Hands-On Research
For fiction to ring as real, authors need to do their research. Sometimes, that means stepping out of the office and away from the library and the Internet and going to places where you can touch and feel the things you're writing about. For me, the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas provides that opportunity. But more important that playing with the toys is meeting the people who can help you.
