Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 2021 Reaction | Master Chronometer 3861

Hello folks and welcome back to Wonder of Watches. Happy New Year or more importantly, happy speedy Tuesday. Today, I look at the new Calibre 3861 Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 2021. I take a look at the specifications, compare it to the previous model moonwatch and post my reaction. Hope you enjoy.
OMG, they put the dot over 90, take my fuckin money Omega

If you are a watch enthusiast, you have no doubt heard of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. Even if you’re not so enthusiastic about watches, Omega have produced so many versions of the moonwatch, that its likely to have hit your radar at some point. But special editions aside, the original and best Omega Speedmaster Professional has just received an upgrade. And to say I’m excited is an understatement.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional has a staggering history. Of course it was the first watch to be worn on the moon which Omega constantly wishes to remind us. There are literally hundreds of editions of the watch but the main stay in recent years was the watch with the 1861 movement available in both hesalite with a solid caseback and sapphire on both front and back. Even the sapphire was controversial as moonwatch aficionados tend to opt for the hesalite version as this was the version worn in space. And not for any spurious reason, the heslalite was chosen because if it took a knock, it would crack and not shard causing untold damage to vital instruments, equipment and even astronauts in 0 gravity.

So how does this new release differ from the previous now discontinued model?

Well first and foremost, the movement gets a serious upgrade. Moving from the 1861 to the 3861. Omega have stated that it has taken them 4 years to produce a calibre that could achieve Master Chronometer certification, whilst also matching the dimensons of the previous movement. What does Master Chronometer Certification mean? It means that the movement is certified twice, first to COSC standards by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute and then by undergoing 8 stringent METAS tests during which it must be able to withstand a magnetic field of 15,000 gaus, basically you can put in in an MRI machine and still maintain its power reserve and an accuracy 0 to + 5 seconds per day. Omega has increased the power reserve by 2 hours to 50 hours here. This was all achieved by the inclusion in the 3861 of Omegas C0-axial escaptement and Silicon Si14 Balance Spring. The number of jewels also take a jump from 18 to 28. Please don’t ask me where they are all hiding.

Omega also stated that they have had to adjust the minute track for the new movements frequency but from what I can see it maintains the 21,600bph of the 1861. I’m open to correction here. Also, although I cant see clarification of this on the website, I believe these new movements increase the watches water resistance to 100 metres. Maybe get confirmation on that though before you take a dunk.

But to the trained eye, there are cosmetic difference here too and before we all geek out about the dot over 90, lets look at some of these. The dial returns the stepped feature that we haven’t seen since 1974, and the counterweight on the Chronometer seconds hand has also taken on more of tear drop form as was the case with the speedmasters used on the moon. However, surprisingly enough, only the upgraded sapphire version gets an applied Omega Logo just under the 12 O’Clock position. That’s a little disappointing for me that the hesalite version doesn’t get this and may be reason enough to upgrade. But I would still want the hesalite to be more true to the moonwatch.

The bracelet has also changed, its still 5 link but the three larger links appear now to be asymmetrical, again interestingly enough, the smaller intermediate links are polished on the sapphire version but have a matt finish on the hesalite. The end links look better too employing a recessed centre link rather than a protruding one which will make the watch much more wearable.

Then look at the clasp and those oval double pushers and Omega logo doubling as a place to get your finger nail under, there is little else I need to say here, just look and marvel.

The new Ø42mm Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is based on the 4th iteration of the watch, meaning the case dimensions and beveled case back is according to the original Moonwatch with reference 105.012. Basically, it’s the same case as the Apollo XI 50th anniversary or Silver Snoopy Award, which was introduced last October. The bezel is made of steel, with an aluminum insert and a Dot-Over-Ninety on the tachymeter scale.

We need to talk about that . 0ver 90. As Omega says on their website, watch aficionados, inverted commas, really geek out over this stuff. So apparently Omega hasn’t included that .over 90 since 1969 so again this makes the aluminium bezel insert a greater homage to actual speedys worn on the moon by Buzz and his successors.
