Hello folks and welcome back to Wonder of Watches.

That was Winter Time by RLS, beautifully read by my wife. Unfortunately, you have to listen to my voice again now as I bring the cultural tone down a peg or two. So this is the Seiko Sarx055, another JDM release and for me it perfectly captures the essence of a cold, fresh and sparkling winters morning as written about by the Scottish Poet.

In my last video, I took a look at one of the Sarx range, the sarx035 black dial version.
Now obviously there are very similar design cues here to the sarx035, namely, the design of the case, hands, and bracelet. Also the movement is the same – the workhorse 6r15 made inhouse by Seiko offering 50 hours of power reserve and beats at a frequency of 21,600bph. But there are 2 major differences that we need to take a closer look at. Firstly, the case and bracelet is made entirely from titanium. Primarily, this makes for a far lighter watch than my own sarx. In fact, I was taken aback when I took it out of its box for the first time. My own sarx weighs 158 g on the bracelet but this weighs a meagre 106g and you barely notice it on the wrist. In fact you forget its there until you go to check the time.

The case finishing has similar characteristics to my own sarx. Again we have brushed lugs which continue around the polished bezel, which then transition to highly polished sides. The inside of the lugs are also highly polished where the slope down to meet the bracelet. Now this finishing is highly impressive in steel but Titanium is notoriously difficult to finish so it is all the more impressive here. And Seiko have absolutely nailed the graining of the brushed elements.

The dial takes on a frosted white form that is absolutely beautiful. In fact, I think I prefer this to my own black dial version and I think Marc definitely made the correct choice here. Its absolutely stunning.

I must say again that I don’t feel this is a dress watch but is quite sporty on the bracelet and can be used every day so the 41mm diameter is not an issue for me and in fact the larger face makes it an extremely legible watch. I wear the sarx with a pair of jeans and a polo shirt regularly and I really like the look.

The other major difference here is the Dial and it is absolutely beautiful. Its not nicknamed the Baby Grand Seiko Snowflake for nothing and again we have the anti reflective coating on both sides of the crystal so we get full access to that frosty loveliness. The dial is extremely dynamic.

However, they’ve managed it, Seiko seem to have recreated that almost transparent look of frost or ice whilst still delivering the astonishing patterns that can be seen on an icy surface. There is still great depth to the dial and To me it feels like there is water underneath the ice giving it a shadowy depth. Or even how a frosty window looks in the early hours of a winters morning. The finishing is incredible under macro, the sheer volume of striations used to form a most dynamic pattern.

The indices are different to the sarx035 too. Whereas the indices there had grooves on the top facet, there are no grooves here. We get highly polished facets on all sides, finishing is incredible, and the indices contribute to the general frosty icy theme here. But in a very exquisite way. This watch too me looks so expensive and completely belies it’s real price.

In fact I would consider it to be a real alternative to the iconic GS Snowflake but it is different. The snowflake obviously uses the smoot as butter Spring Drive Movement and the dial looks like a field of fallen snow where this looks like icy frost but it is literally less than ¼ of the price.

The bracelet is similarly designed to the sarx035, check out my video here, but one difference I did not immediately notice is that his sides of the titanium bracelet are brushed or satinised compared to the stainless steel version where we see a high polish finish.

Other minor differences include the blued seconds hand and the fully polished hands as opposed to half brushed and half polished. But the fact that the fully polished hands reflect everything in sight is negates by the fact that they are backed by a white dial.

The watch is still available from Seiyajapan.com for EURO 866, shoppinginjapan.net also have it as do gnomon watches. Be careful of Import taxes and duties.

Good luck everyone, Ben
