On this day in 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets—and launched the modern environmental movement.

In 1970, America had a pollution crisis. Rivers literally caught fire from chemical contamination. Toxic smog blanketed major cities. Oil spills devastated coastlines. Industrial waste poisoned communities.

But there were no environmental protections—no Environmental Protection Agency, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act. Pollution was just accepted as the price of economic progress.

Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin decided enough was enough. He organized a national teach-in about environmental issues and called it Earth Day. He chose April 22, 1970.

On that day, 20 million Americans—roughly 10% of the entire U.S. population—participated in rallies, cleanups, protests, and demonstrations. Students walked out of schools. Families marched in the streets. Activists demanded change.

It was one of the largest organized demonstrations in American history.

The message was clear: we cannot keep destroying the planet we live on.

Politicians listened. By the end of 1970, President Richard Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Congress passed the Clean Air Act. Then the Clean Water Act in 1972. Then the Endangered Species Act in 1973.

Environmental laws that still protect our air, water, and wildlife today all trace back to that first Earth Day.

Earth Day didn't just raise awareness—it changed laws and created lasting institutions.

The first Earth Day proved that when people demand change, governments listen.
