The Day Love Became Murder - St. Valentine's Day Massacre - February 14, 1929

You know February 14th as the day of love. But in 1929, it became the day of murder.

Chicago, 1929. Prohibition turned bootlegging into big business. Two rival gangs battled for control: Al Capone's South Side gang and Bugs Moran's North Side gang. Violence was escalating. Something had to give.

Valentine's Day morning. Men dressed as police entered a warehouse on North Clark Street. Seven of Moran's men lined up against a wall, thinking it was a raid.

Then the guns opened fire. All seven were executed. Capone's men—disguised as cops. America was stunned.

The massacre exposed Prohibition's brutality and sparked a federal crackdown on organized crime. Capone would fall within two years.

The darkest Valentine's Day in American history.
