Yema unboxing

Hello folks and welcome back to Wonder of Watches. This is the Yema Heritage Superman Blue. An unboxing and first impressions.

TDLR; I absolutely love this piece

Intro

First of all, I just want to say a huge thank you to my cousin John Breen, who has allowed me to use some of his surf footage for the intro. Please check out his channel eponymously entitled John Breen. The channel features amazing drone footage of South County Ireland but Johns speciality is catching footage of those catching waves. Its stunning stuff.

Also just want to give a quick shout out to Paul Meagher who is an Irish Craft worker in Ireland who builds these astonishing desks from stained Canadian pine and industrial steel legs. The desk has finally given me a proper work station to operate from. No more spotty table cloth.

Ok so with any watch there are pros and cons. Now one of the major cons with this one is the first link of the bracelet. It doesn’t articulate and …..How this affects you is really gonna depend on your wrist size but I have spindly wrists so the bracelet juts out over my wrist on both sides. It doesn’t look so bad. But I cant live with it so before we continue, I need to swap it out. So I picked up 2 Yema Strap options here.

OK so I’ve been looking at divers lately that are a little bit different to a derivative of the Rolex Sub, Triangle at 12, rectangles at 3,6 & 9 circles everywhere else. Its not hard to see how a vintage Tudor Snowflake, the Willard, Zodiac or Zelos hold so much appeal as they break from that standard.

And then we have the Yema Superman Heritage Blue. Is there another diver that looks anything like this. 39mm in Diameter, the case here takes a very vintage vibe. We have a brushed centre portion sandwiched between a thin coin edged bezel and a very thin high polished flank.

Sitting atop all of this is an extravagantly domed sapphire crystal that has a light magnifying lense affect which results in a crazy distortion of the dial and indices. As I said I absolutely love this piece, its stunning IMO.

The bezel is also sapphire and I love how proportional it is to the rest of the case. When you look at the watch on your wrist, it looks like a flat plane, like the crystal is completely flat, its not until you look at it side on that see that spectacularly domes crystal. Of course there is the unique Yema bezel lock that works in tandem with the crown to keep the bezel in place

Now this watch is a reimagining of a watch which Yema originally introduced in 1963. Considered to be indestructible the watch was the time keeper of choice for the French Air Force.

And that’s not the only Feather in Yemas cap.

So just some quick specs

But in addition to the class looking case, the other star of the show here is the dial. It is hard to describe and has almost a jewel like quality. It’s a sunburst blue but unlike any of my other blue divers and at times it takes on a purple appearance.

But it was the indices that drew me to this watch. The dial is beset with these square block indices, dissected down the middle by a thin sliver of lume. Indoors they are quite reflective but outdoors the steel blocks come to life and the light play is fantastic, particularly in tandem with the magnifying crystal.

The hands are beautifully finished with plenty of lume and Seiko Afficionados will recognise that lollipop second hand, a similar version of which dons many a vintage Seiko.

So its beautiful, at least in my opinion, but is it perfect? Well no, nothing is perfect, there is the aforementioned problem with the bracelet and the lume much stronger on the hands than the indices. There is noteworthy backplay with the bezel.

But I can forgive those issues because this is one of the most beautiful divers I have handled.
