Compression Secrets Revealed: Demystifying Compression for the Modern Producer
You know you've got a banger when you title your video The Defcon Level 1 secrets to compression: demystifying compression; the techniques and pro tips they don't want to you know to take your music to epic levels previously considered unimaginable... 😂
That's what I wanted to title the video anyway. But of course there are no hidden "secrets" or gate kept techniques that are going to suddenly take your music and sounds to new heights. In this video I break down and explain the questions I ask myself when applying compression and we do a few examples with a few different types of compressors and other dynamic effects to achieve the results we want to achieve.
Coming to grips with compression and different types of compressors takes time and experience and for that reason the best thing that I can recommend is to only add one compressor to your plugin list at a time and try it out on everything. You're sure to find flattering results fro some sounds and displeasing results for others. When you've figured out what sorts of sounds work well with that compressor you're ready to add another to the list and so on. For the modern music producer it's just simply figuring when compression is appropriate versus using a peak limiter, a saturator, a dedicated transient designer, or dynamic EQ. When you work with a lot of samples these are typically processed and compressed already so a lot of the "standard" compression and compressor types just won't work the way you want them to. All that being said hopefully you learn a thing or two from this video.
