Bitwig 2.0 - Treemonster (Ring Modulator Gone Wild)

https://www.sormena.org/ for more of my free courses.

The treemonster is a new ring modulation based effect introduced with Bitwig Studio 2.0. It's intimidating and at times seems to defy all logic or convention (this has everything to do with the pitch detection that's determining the source frequency of the resulting ring modulation).

In the first half of the video I do my best to break down how it works technically (using sine waves) and then in the 2nd half go through 2 examples of how this effect can be used on more complex signals (pads and leads).

Fundamentally this effect is all about Pitch Detection. How does it happen when does it happen, at what speed does it happen, and how does it effect the sum and difference frequencies that are generated via ring modulation. Rarely do I think you need to watch a video twice but this may be an exception because this is both a complex effect to explain and to control.

01:05 Ring Modulation Review (Bitwig Studio Ring Mod Device)

03:44 Creative Ring Mod Application (Taking Advantage of Source and Post FX) Later on we modulate the source frequency to create interesting ring mod pitch shift effects. This is useful because the treemonster does this in more of an “automatic” and intelligent way.

06:24 TreeMonster Technical Breakdown (How it Works) As an FYI you can always back down the RING amount to see/hear a sine wave where the pitch detection (pitch tracking) is occurring. It’s a very useful reference when you blend back in some of the original signal.

18:38 Soapbox about the value and intrigue of new creative FX

19:05 Modulating controls on the Treemonster (including the Threshold)

20:24 Example of Modulating parameters on the Treemonster with just sine waves

21:52 Example with a more complex patch (pad sound)..This is a Mono Effect.

23:05 Using WET FX (Bringing some “Steroness” back).. All About that Modulation and Automation

25:07 Example with a more complex patch (lead sound) 2. This time we try to force (contain) when the Treemonster re detects pitch by actually chopping up our audio signal to force silence (go below threshold).
