Being a Roman Emperor sounds like a solid gig. You get to where purple; trained guards follow you everywhere; and there's a chance of being deified after death. Unfortunately, there was a major drawback to these benefits: Seven times out of ten, you die of unnatural causes. A few Romans were able to safely navigate the principate minefield and none was more clever than the man who created the position — Caesar Augustus. In this video, I identify the mistakes made by Augustus’s contemporaries and attempt to discover how Augustus was able to survive history's most dangerous job.
