With the arrival of Portuguese people in 1500, Brazil had about 8 million indigenous people divided into different groups. The first contact with an indigenous language was with the people who lived on the coast of the continent who the majority spoke a variation of Tupi language

Between 16th and 17th centuries, it was planned to create a General Language which indigenous, colonizers, slaves from Africa and jesuits could communicate it

So Nheengatu, junction of the words nhe'enga and katú which means 'good language', was created. The language has other nicknames also as Modern Tupi, Brasílica language and even called General Amazonian language
