What is Tabata? A high-intensity interval training (HIIT) format built on one simple rule: 20 seconds of all-out work, followed by 10 seconds of rest — repeated 8 times for a 4-minute block.

Named after Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata, this protocol was developed in the 1990s to push your aerobic and anaerobic systems to the limit in minimal time. You can use it with almost any exercise — jumping jacks, squats, burpees, sprints, and more.
