People Self Mutilatilate at Thaipusam
We embarked on a 12 hour pilgrimage with 2 million Hindu devotees as they celebrated Thaipusam through self-mutilation. They weighted hooks in their backs and stuck spears through their tongues. The idea of self-harm as a religious ceremony is shocking to us. We wanted to understand why people would go to such lengths to practice their faith.
