Nothing Wrong with My African Brain | Dr. Rachael Dangarembizi | TEDxUCTSalon
It is amazing how society still categorises human potential based on power structures entrenched in discrimination and exclusion. Discrimination of any kind is limiting even to the greatest potential but moreso for those who sit at the intersection of multiple elements that one can be discriminated for. In her TEDx talk “Nothing wrong with my African brain”, Dr Rachael Dangarembizi, a neuroscientist and researcher shares how her overlapping identities sometimes get in her way as a young, black, African woman navigating the global scientific terrain. She describes how brilliant brains are usually discriminated against and not given a platform to thrive because they are packaged in a black/female/African/immigrant body, or in her case, in all of these. Her narrative stems from her desire to clarify the human brain’s relation to a society that defines humanity based on power structures entrenched in a world rooted in exclusion.
