How does the German Power Grid work?
Germany's power grid ranks among the most reliable in the world. But how does that work considering the majority of electricity is supplied by renewable energy sources?
Enjoy! 😀

15:10 - Can an Industrialized Society run off of renewables?
16:25 - Conclusion
What are Germany's electricity sources?
On paper, coal and nuclear capacities have been easily substituted by an unprecedented boom in renewable energy sources. The term “energy transition” has its origin in the German word “Energiewende”. The last nuclear power plant will shut down in 2022 and all existing coal-fired generation will be retired by 2038. But how are fluctuations from renewables handled and how is electricity collected from prosumers, who used to be consumers only? It looks like we need gas power plants to fill some of the gap in the mid term. Technically, we can make them H2-ready.
Who owns and manages the German power grid?
In Germany, the maximum voltage transmission grid is owned by four transmission system operators (TSOs) - TenneT, 50Hertz, Amprion, and TransnetBW -, which are responsible for the operation, maintenance, and development of their respective sections of the grid. It is their job to regulate the power supply, including balancing fluctuating power from renewables with more predictable conventional generation.
