Slurry Walls are the strongest method for supporting the sides of an excavation (SOE). They can be reinforced with rebar cages as well as structural steel members to minimize the number of braces or struts required. Each panel is excavated with a bucket especially designed for that purpose. The weight of the bucket insures that it will remain plumb and the jaws of the bucket are designed to open and close within the confines of the panel being excavated. The sides of the panel are kept from collapsing by keeping the excavation filled with a bentonite slurry.
The hydrostatic head together with bentonite's property of creating a film on the excavated surface keeps the sides open. A system of pipes throughout the project keeps the slurry topped off and removes slurry as it is replaced with concrete.
A second style of bucket called a hydro mill is also demonstrated. I have constructed slurry walls to a depth of 100 feet a I have been on a project that went to 200 feet.
