Hiking Picacho Peak near Tucson, Arizona

If you are near Tucson you’ll probably see Picacho Peak – we could see it from almost everywhere in Tucson (45 miles away).

Don’t miss the opportunity to hike up this prominent spire.

Anders and I reached the summit via the 1.6-mile Hunter Trail in @picachopeakstatepark.

(“Picacho” means “peak” in Spanish, so it translates to “Peak Peak” or “Picacho Picacho.” )

Though the trail is short, it’s steep! 1,500 feet, some of which you have to pull yourself up using the cables. And it has a downhill section in the middle, which I always find a little disheartening.

I wore gloves on the cable sections (Anders didn’t). Carry plenty of water. We hiked in January so it was cool, but if you go in summer, be prepared for hot, hot, hot!

Interestingly, Picacho Peak is the location of the most western conflict of the Civil War. The “Battle of Picacho Pass,” took place between Union and Confederate soldiers and is reenacted each March.

Save this if you are going to Tucson!
