Inside a Classified Government Research Facility Unveiling My Journal Entries Part two

It almost seemed as if the creature was showcasing additional neurons, suggesting a display of intelligence. Yet, the state it was in raised questions about its cognitive abilities. Notably, a considerable amount of grey slime had accumulated at the tank's bottom, resembling fungi or a slime mold rather than lifeless mucus. The creature would expel rigid structures from its stalks, dispersing towards the tank's edges before disintegrating and settling below. Supposedly, routine cleaning was necessary due to this buildup, though the structures were captivating nonetheless.
As I observed, Morrison stood beside me. Given his position, I assumed he had encountered this entity countless times, yet he appeared entranced by the specimen, as if in a trance. But who could blame him? What lay before us was utterly captivating, an entirely new discovery for our species. Before I knew it, I was hastily escorted out and briefed on the situation. The creature was discovered in the depths of our oceans, they say. Scientists, utilizing an unmanned drone, captured another of its kind giving birth, leading to the creation of the specimen we were observing. The parent was later captured. Through various genetic analyses and other tests, the initial research team found a minute genetic connection to any known Earthly animal. Even then, it suggested a rudimentary shared genetic ancestry predating the formation of our planet. That's when the federal government intervened. Yet, with all the effort invested in identifying an animal, part of me wishes I were naive enough to believe there isn't more to the story.
Entry 8 – June 29th,
A peculiar atmosphere has settled in the lab recently. What was once a space filled with passionate individuals eager to engage in conversation has inexplicably turned chilly. I find it puzzling. We're all in this together, isolated from the outside world, and leaning on each other was crucial for maintaining our sanity. Yet, people now seem to keep their heads down. It's disorienting. Additionally, there's an odd smell lingering. I'm not sure if others have noticed, but I catch whiffs of it occasionally. I'll do my best to stay in my room when not required in the office. Perhaps the cleaning crew has been neglecting the vents?
Entry 9 – July 5th,
This year, we missed out on a 4th of July celebration, despite working harder than ever. Morrison surprised everyone by yelling at a team member today, a departure from his usual even-keeled demeanor. I've witnessed him handle serious mistakes with a calm approach, always focusing on improvement. It feels unsettling. Thankfully, Abed and Mia seem unaffected. Mia shared her concerns, revealing that the lab is diverting funds, resources, and personnel from other departments into research due to "unforeseen circumstances" in deemed "non-essential" areas. Janitorial services, human resources, employee enrichment services, and research on the medical applications of these cells have all been drastically reduced or eliminated. The situation is baffling. Meanwhile, the strange smell has intensified.
