How to Measure Your Oil Tank Level Using a Simple Timer

Using a simple Omron H7ET timer to count the running time of an oil boiler, in order to calculate the oil usage. This method relies on the oil flow rate through the nozzle, which is very predictable. Multiply this flow rate (gallons/hour) by the number of hours the burner has run (using the timer), and you have an exact count of the amount of oil used.

The Omron H7ET is available in many places, like eBay, for around $10-$20. You need the version that is triggered by an AC voltage. This particular model is the H7ET-NFV1 (newer model), or the H7ET-FBV1 (older model).
