Le Mont St-Michel

Le Mont-Saint-Michel (Mount St. Michael) - is a rocky tidal island, an outcrop of a granite rock emerging 256 ft. above a sandy bay off the coast of Normandy. A magnificent Abbey built on top of this rock to an imposing height of 558 ft. above the bay makes it a stunning sight standing alone in the middle of the bay like a a silhouette in the horizon or a castle out of a fairytale storybook. It is an architectural gem in the middle ages with diverse combined architectural style of romanesque, gothic, carolingian, military & religious formats, constructed in a masterful & artistic way, to be dubbed as the "wonder of the west." The mystique of this structure, its unique location together w/ the cult of St. Michael made this a place of religious worship that grew to a major Christian pilgrimage site in the middle ages. In spite of its turbulent history for the past 1300 years, it has survive & preserved its medieval features to be recognized as a Historical Monument in France and then listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
