ABISSA Cultural Festival, West Africa 11/2015

The Abissa Cultural Festival is the grandest celebration in West Africa. It is an age old tradition celebrated in the old French colonial city of Grand-Bassam, Cote d' Ivoire (Gold Coast) that features a week long of lively if not frenzied dancing, impassioned singing, rhythmic drum beatings, grand parades etc., Every November of each year this sleepy town of Grand-Bassam doubles its population by 6 times from people coming from near & afar from different regions of West Africa. Majority are from the 7 tribes of the N'Zima people that for centuries gather here to celebrate their ancient culture, history, royalty & religion. The masquerade & carnival atmosphere of this event is the forerunner of the Mardi Gras in New Orleans & Carnival in Rio de Janaeiro, a tradition brought by the enslave Africans to the New World during the slave trade from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Carnivals has its roots in Africa. This event & place has been recently listed in the UNESCO Cultural World Heritage site August 2015
