Before the pandemic, one day, after sailing and after we docked, Captain Ben said, “Sailors, let’s go grab a beer at the Broadway!” (There was actually only me and him). I thought to myself, “Boy, after bouncing up and down at sea for 80 hours, you don’t feel dizzy enough and want a beer?!” I’d go, but probably drink something else, cos beer is bitter to me.

We arrived at Broadway, sat down at this al fresco place for a drink, which had a Japanese style dekotora lighted truck there. The side was opened and there was a stage there with people busking on it. I said to Captain Ben, “one day, I am gonna bring my daughter Mina here and to play the guitar on the truck. It’s gonna be fun!” Ben said, “You nuts?! If you played, why not at Roadhouse behind us? Look at the PA system and the proper stage!!! People can hear you inside and outside. Now that’d be something cool!”

Then I suddenly thought of the guy selling airplane olives outside Seventh Heaven or Paramount Nightclub in Shanghai in 1935, watching big shots/big bosses walking in with hot ladies in gown or qipao. Being able to sell airplane olives from Guangzhou in Shanghai in front of these nightclubs would be quite good already, yet working inside as a waiter, boy, that’d be surreal. So, busking on that dekotora lighted truck would be fun already, but of course I envy the professional musicians and bands gigging on stage inside.

And who would have thought.... we skipped the busking on the truck part and our band will be gigging at the Roadhouse one night soon! Yet it will not be me bringing my daughter there, as once again, it’s her bringing me noe, as I will be the roadie and I get to tag along and gig on stage!

You might ask, why not be the big boss walking inside 7th Heaven, smoking a Hoyo torpedo and sipping on cognac, or sitting down inside the Roadhouse and be a guest and dine and wine there? Well, that I will leave to you on 4th February at 830pm, as the Cotton kids with Brother Ray, Mina Pang, bassist Twinkle and Long tall Jennifer our drummer, will be performing for you. If you are in the neighborhood, would you have time to bring your friends and family to watch us and have a great time there?
