"Don't Dream it's Over" NEO SOUL Guitar Mateus Asato マテウス・アサト ver. - Young guitarist Mina Pang 千齡

Ok, as promised, here comes a song Mina has been working on with the utmost seriousness because she says she wants to do it really right: "Don't Dream it's Over" in neo soul style inspired by Mateus Asato. Boy, do we love this soothing and enchanting tune or what?! Hope you like it. The original song was so popular when old dad was in high school. I had no idea what the Crowded House sang, but the song was big, and it sure marked some of the good old days in the 80s.

Now, why are we playing neo soul songs again? Well, there are different reasons.

Reason no.1: I wouldn't say it feels like a car without wheels when our drummer Jennifer is on long vacation doing whatever that is she is doing in Japan until oh, who knows when....tell me, who is going to play the drums for us?! Mina can and in fact, she finally claimed her X'mas present, which is a drums stool, so she is sitting down playing this song. But, if she plays the drums, who will play lead?! I can, but then who will play rhythm?! You see, it's not as easy as you think. 😝

Now, back to what I was saying. I was thinking it's like a car without wheels. I was going to say that but instead of that, how about I say it feels like a sailboat without the sail? It's not the mast because if that's gone, it will cost too much money and many things could go wrong. I have sailed many times without the sail and hey, it aint' no dinghy, so there is always the diesel engine and even without the sail, one can still go to the Manila and kaohsiung in Taiwan already and it won't cost an arm. So, when Jennifer our drummer is checking out new scoops in Japan (probably for us too, perhaps she will bring us back many guitars as she is in Ochanomizu), we can still play some music. ;-))) See, watch the video again and notice Mina was playing neo soul and she didn't even need me. hahaha! 😂😂😂 Well, she DID need me, cos I needed to give her the two thumbs up at the end. But, Jennifer will come back in due time. She still needs to bring us to HK and or mainland China. We are ready to gig there! (She will drive us around in China she says, as old dad has no interest to drive in China these days. They use GPS and don't have maps around no more!)

Reason no. 2: I remember the very first time I got a brand new motorboat, the president of the yacht club went out with us in the maiden voyage. On the way back, we cruised by a sailboat and he said this to me, "you know, one of these days, you will NOT do motorboat no more and you will join me and do sailboat." I went in my heart, "get out of town! I ain't gonna sail no sailboat?! I am doing 15 to 20 knots and even the marine police asked me to race them. Why would I do like 5 knots and sail to HK like in 10 hours?! " Besides, it was the first time I got my own motorboat. But he said to me the above. I DID tell him nicely and said, "hey man, it's the maiden voyage and you are telling me to quit already!?" He clarified and said, "not quit, but switch." It was quite some years ago, and gasoline was still quite cheap. Of course, I don't even remember the last time I pumped gas for a boat no more. No one drives a motorboat from where I am to Taiwan or the Philipines really. Even taking a motorboat to HK, the gas money is insane. Why am I talking about boats? Well, it's not about boats. It's about switching. About 2 years ago, we went to the workshop of the local heavy band called "FIDA" and had a nice catch up with their frontman Ferdie. Mina was obessed with playing Avenged Sevenfold back then and other heavy metal groups, and Ferdie said to her, "Mina, one day, you will not be wanting to use distortion nor overdrive much, and you might want something quite clean with no drive..." then Mina and him jammed "Slow Dancing in the burning room" and other songs.

Two years have past, and Mina yesterday told me that she remembered what Ferdie said and thought he was right. We are using the overdrive pedal a lot less. Hey, look at Mina playing neo soul. She first played neo soul about 2 years ago.

Yap, we have been playing lots of rock and J-pop these days. It's time to "cleanse our souls" again because when Jennifer comes back, we will be doing a lot of rock and J-pop again. Of course, surf rock too. That way, we jam in the bandroom again and turn all the amps up! yeah!
